Sloppy Joe
A saucy, sweet-and-tangy ground beef mixture piled high on hamburger buns with melted cheese. The ultimate easy weeknight crowd-pleaser.
Ingredients
- 2.5 lb 93% lean ground beef (hamburger)
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 1 red or green pepper, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, diced or crushed
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 1/4 cups ketchup
- 4 teaspoons yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- Hamburger buns
- Grated cheddar cheese
- Salad to serve
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add the diced onion, pepper, and garlic. Cook for a few minutes until softened.
- Add the salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir everything together well.
- Simmer over medium-low heat for 10-15 minutes until the sauce has thickened and coats the meat.
- Spoon generously onto hamburger buns, top with grated cheddar, and serve with salad.
Notes
- Ketchup quantity: 1.25 cups sounds like a lot, but it reduces down and balances the other flavours. Trust the recipe.
- Buns: Toasting the buns in a hot pan with a little butter prevents them going soggy from the sloppy filling.
- Leftovers: The meat mixture keeps well in the fridge for 3 days and freezes beautifully.
- Heat: Add a dash of hot sauce or a pinch of chilli flakes if you want some heat in the mix.
