Korean Beef Bowl
Savoury, slightly spicy ground beef in a soy and sesame sauce, served over lettuce leaves with rice, green onions, and sesame seeds. Fast and completely addictive.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 lb ground beef
- 5 cloves garlic, minced or sliced
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- {"For the sauce"=>nil}
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 4 teaspoons sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (or add sliced serrano after cooking for fresh heat)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- {"To serve"=>nil}
- Green onions, sliced
- Lettuce leaves
- Cooked rice
- Sesame seeds
Instructions
- Mix together the soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and ground ginger in a small bowl.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the garlic and fry for a few seconds until just starting to colour.
- Add the ground beef. Brown well, breaking it up as it cooks.
- Add the sauce and cook gently for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Serve the beef over lettuce leaves. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds, with rice on the side.
Notes
- Sesame oil: Use toasted sesame oil rather than regular — it has a much stronger, more fragrant flavour.
- Lettuce wraps: Serving the beef in lettuce leaves keeps it lighter. Butter lettuce or little gem work perfectly.
- Fresh heat: Adding sliced serrano peppers at the end rather than red pepper flakes gives a different — fresher — heat.
- Leftovers: The beef reheats brilliantly. Make a double batch and use the next day in tacos or fried rice.
