Korean Beef Bowl

Korean Beef Bowl

Savoury, slightly spicy ground beef in a soy and sesame sauce, served over lettuce leaves with rice, green onions, and sesame seeds. Fast and completely addictive.

Prep: 10 min Cook: 15 min Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced or sliced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • {"For the sauce"=>nil}
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 4 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (or add sliced serrano after cooking for fresh heat)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • {"To serve"=>nil}
  • Green onions, sliced
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Cooked rice
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Mix together the soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and ground ginger in a small bowl.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the garlic and fry for a few seconds until just starting to colour.
  3. Add the ground beef. Brown well, breaking it up as it cooks.
  4. Add the sauce and cook gently for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Serve the beef over lettuce leaves. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds, with rice on the side.

Notes

  • Sesame oil: Use toasted sesame oil rather than regular — it has a much stronger, more fragrant flavour.
  • Lettuce wraps: Serving the beef in lettuce leaves keeps it lighter. Butter lettuce or little gem work perfectly.
  • Fresh heat: Adding sliced serrano peppers at the end rather than red pepper flakes gives a different — fresher — heat.
  • Leftovers: The beef reheats brilliantly. Make a double batch and use the next day in tacos or fried rice.
